Every forex trader talks in pips. "The stop is 20 pips away", "GBP/USD moved 120 pips today", "I made 45 pips". Once you understand what a pip is and what it is worth, position sizing, stop losses and profit targets all become much easier.

What a pip is

Forex quote with bid, ask and spread
A forex quote: the spread between bid and ask is measured in pips.

Pip stands for "percentage in point" or "price interest point". It is the standard unit for measuring how far an exchange rate has moved.

  • For most currency pairs, one pip is the fourth decimal place: 0.0001.
  • For pairs where the Japanese yen is the quote currency, one pip is the second decimal place: 0.01.

If EUR/USD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0875, it has moved 25 pips. If USD/JPY moves from 151.20 to 151.65, it has moved 45 pips.

Pips versus points (pipettes)

Most brokers quote prices with one extra digit, for example 1.08503 instead of 1.0850. That last digit is a point or pipette, worth one tenth of a pip. MetaTrader often measures stops in points, so a "200 point" stop is really 20 pips. Mixing the two up is a classic beginner mistake that makes a trade ten times bigger or smaller than intended.

What is one pip worth?

A pip's value depends on how big your position is and which currency the pair is quoted in.

Pip value = Units traded × Pip size

The result is in the quote currency, the second currency in the pair.

Position Units Pip value on EUR/USD
1 standard lot 100,000 $10.00
1 mini lot 10,000 $1.00
1 micro lot 1,000 $0.10

So when your account is in dollars and the pair ends in USD, the maths is easy: one standard lot is $10 per pip.

When the quote currency is not your account currency

On USD/JPY the quote currency is yen. One pip on a standard lot is 100,000 × 0.01 = ¥1,000. To turn that into dollars, divide by the USD/JPY price. At 150, ¥1,000 is about $6.67. When the yen gets stronger the same pip is worth more dollars, and when it weakens, fewer.

On a cross pair such as EUR/GBP, a pip on one lot is £10. For a dollar account you multiply by GBP/USD.

Pips on gold, silver and indices

Gold and silver do not have an official pip, so conventions differ by broker. A common setup:

  • Gold (XAU/USD): 1 lot = 100 ounces, 1 pip = $0.10, so 1 pip = $10 per lot and a $1 move = 10 pips = $100 per lot.
  • Silver (XAG/USD): 1 lot = 5,000 ounces, 1 pip = $0.01, so 1 pip = $50 per lot.

Indices and crypto are usually measured in points or simply in price, for example "the S&P 500 fell 40 points" or "Bitcoin dropped $1,200". Always check your broker's contract specification before you size a trade.

Why pips matter

Measuring in pips lets you compare moves across pairs and plan trades in a way that does not depend on your position size. You decide that your stop is 30 pips away and your target 60 pips away, a 1:2 risk to reward, and only then work out the lot size that makes those 30 pips cost the amount you are willing to risk.

How many pips do pairs move in a day?

The average daily range changes with volatility, but as a rough guide in normal conditions: EUR/USD often moves 50 to 90 pips a day, GBP/USD 80 to 130, GBP/JPY 120 to 200, and gold several hundred pips. Knowing this helps you set realistic targets: a 150-pip target on EUR/USD for a day trade is usually too ambitious.

Frequently asked questions

How much is 10 pips worth?

On EUR/USD with a dollar account, 10 pips are worth $100 on one standard lot, $10 on a mini lot and $1 on a micro lot.

Why are JPY pairs different?

The yen has a much lower value per unit than most currencies, so USD/JPY trades around 100 to 160 instead of near 1. The pip is moved to the second decimal so that a pip is still a similar small percentage of the price.

How many pips is a good daily target?

There is no fixed number. It depends on the pair's daily range, your timeframe and your risk to reward. Focus on following your plan and your risk per trade rather than a pip target.
