Automated forex trading is one of the fastest-growing topics in trading. A forex trading robot, called an expert advisor (EA) in MetaTrader, opens and closes trades for you according to fixed rules, 24 hours a day, without fear or greed. Used well, it removes emotion and saves hours. Used badly, it can empty an account while you sleep. Here is how to tell the difference.

How a trading robot works

An expert advisor is a program that runs inside MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5. On every new price tick or candle it checks its rules, for example "buy when the 21 EMA crosses above the 50 EMA and RSI is above 50, stop loss 1.5 ATR, take profit 3 ATR", and sends the orders to your broker.

Common types of robots:

  • Trend followers: trade breakouts or moving-average signals and ride trends.
  • Scalpers: many small trades in quiet hours. Very sensitive to spreads and execution.
  • Grid and martingale robots: add positions as price moves against them. They show smooth profits for months and can then lose everything in one strong trend.
  • News or volatility robots: trade around fixed events or sessions.

How to judge the best MT4 or MT5 trading robot

The best MT4 trading robot is not the one with the biggest profit screenshot. Look at:

  1. A verified live track record of at least 6 to 12 months on a real account (for example a verified Myfxbook or FXBlue link), not just a backtest.
  2. Maximum drawdown: the biggest fall from a peak. Above 30% to 40% is a warning sign.
  3. Risk per trade and stop losses: every trade should have a stop loss. No stop loss usually means grid or martingale.
  4. Profit factor: gross profit divided by gross loss. Above 1.3 over hundreds of trades is solid.
  5. Consistency: steady results across different months and market conditions.
Equity curves of a steady robot vs a risky martingale robot
A smooth equity curve with small dips is what you want. Very smooth curves with sudden crashes are typical of grid and martingale robots.

Red flags: how to avoid trading robot scams

  • Promises of fixed monthly returns such as "30% a month guaranteed".
  • Only backtests or screenshots, no verified live account.
  • Pressure to deposit with one specific unknown broker.
  • No explanation at all of the strategy or the risk.
  • Grid or martingale without a hard stop loss on the account.

How to run an EA safely

  1. Test on a demo account first for at least four weeks.
  2. Start small on a live account with the lowest lot size.
  3. Use a VPS (virtual private server) close to your broker so the robot runs 24/5 with fast execution. Some brokers give a free VPS to active traders.
  4. Choose a low-cost broker with raw spreads; costs matter more for robots because they trade often.
  5. Set an account stop: close everything if the account falls a fixed percentage.
  6. Turn it off around major news unless the robot is designed for it.

Gold trading robots

Gold trading robots are popular because XAU/USD trends strongly, but gold also moves 20 to 40 dollars a day and spikes on news. A gold EA needs wider stops and smaller lot sizes than a EUR/USD robot. Check the drawdown carefully.

Manual trading vs robots

Robots are excellent at discipline and speed. Humans are better at reading context such as news, unusual market conditions and changing volatility. Many traders combine both: a robot for a tested, rule-based strategy and manual trading with tools like the Alice scanner for discretionary setups.

Frequently asked questions

Do forex trading robots really work?

Some do, for a period, in the market conditions they were built for. None work forever without monitoring. Judge them by verified live results and drawdown, not marketing.

Is automated forex trading legal?

Yes. Most brokers allow expert advisors on MetaTrader. Check your broker's rules on scalping and high-frequency trading.

How much money do I need for a trading robot?

That depends on the robot's lot size and risk. Many can run on a small account with 0.01 lots, but the account must survive the robot's maximum drawdown.

MT4 or MT5 for robots?

MT5 has a faster, multi-threaded strategy tester and more markets; MT4 still has the largest library of older EAs. Both work.
