In this guide
The forex market is open 24 hours a day, five days a week, but it is not equally active all day. Volume, spreads and the size of the moves change a lot from hour to hour. Trading the right hours for your pairs is one of the easiest edges you can give yourself.
Why forex never sleeps

There is no central forex exchange. Currencies are traded between banks, brokers, funds and companies around the world. As the business day starts in one financial centre and ends in another, trading passes around the globe from Sydney to Tokyo to London to New York.
The week starts on Sunday at 17:00 New York time, when Wellington and Sydney open, and ends on Friday at 17:00 New York time.
The four sessions
| Session | Local opening hours | Pairs that move most |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 07:00 to 16:00 | AUD/USD, NZD/USD, AUD/JPY |
| Tokyo | 09:00 to 18:00 | USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, AUD/JPY |
| London | 08:00 to 17:00 | EUR/USD, GBP/USD, EUR/GBP, USD/CHF |
| New York | 08:00 to 17:00 | All USD pairs, USD/CAD, gold, US indices |
Each session is defined in local time, so the times in your own time zone shift when daylight saving starts or ends in Europe, the US or Australia. Japan does not use daylight saving at all. The live clock below always shows the correct times for today.

London and New York
The four or so hours when both London and New York are open are the most liquid of the day. Major US economic data comes out at 8:30 New York time, inside this window, and London traders are still active. EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, gold and US indices often make their biggest moves of the day here.
Tokyo and London
A shorter overlap of about an hour. It is a good window for yen crosses like EUR/JPY and GBP/JPY, as European traders react to what happened in Asia.
Sydney and Tokyo
Quieter, but AUD, NZD and JPY pairs can trend nicely, especially around Australian, New Zealand, Japanese and Chinese data releases.
The London open
Many day traders consider the first two hours of London the best time of the day. Overnight ranges built in Asia often break as European volume arrives, and the direction set in the morning frequently holds into the New York session.
Hours to avoid
- Late New York to the Tokyo open. Volume drops, spreads widen and moves are often random.
- Friday afternoon in New York. Many traders close positions before the weekend, which can cause sudden reversals.
- Sunday's open. Prices can gap from Friday's close and spreads are very wide in the first hour.
- The minutes around major news such as US jobs, inflation or central bank decisions, unless trading news is your plan.
Match the hours to your style
- Scalpers need tight spreads and constant movement. Focus on the London open and the London and New York overlap.
- Day traders can build a plan around one session and the pairs that move in it.
- Swing traders hold for days, so the hours matter less, but entries are still cleaner when the market is liquid.
If you can only trade at certain times because of work, choose the pairs that are active then. Someone in Asia trading in the evening fits the London session; someone in the US trading early in the morning fits the London to New York overlap.
What about gold and crypto?
Gold follows forex hours closely and is most active during London and especially New York, where US data and US yields drive it. Crypto trades every day of the year, but its volume still rises when Europe and the US are awake and drops at weekends. The Crypto Peak Hours tool in the Alice app measures this from real exchange volume, hour by hour.
The Alice scanner scores every crypto, forex, gold and index market from 0 to 100 on every timeframe, so you can spot these setups in seconds.

What time does the forex market open on Monday in my country?
The market opens on Sunday at 17:00 New York time. That is 22:00 UTC in the northern winter and 21:00 UTC in summer. In Pakistan it is about 02:00 or 03:00 on Monday morning, in India about 02:30 or 03:30, in the UAE about 01:00 or 02:00. The live clock converts it for you.
What is the most volatile forex session?
The London session, and especially its overlap with New York, usually has the biggest moves and the highest volume.
Is forex open on public holidays?
Yes, unless it is a weekend, but when a major centre such as London or New York is closed for a holiday the volume in that session drops sharply and moves can be erratic.
