Gold (XAU/USD) is the favourite market of many forex traders: it trends well, moves fast and reacts strongly to the news. It also punishes traders who enter without a plan. This is a complete gold trading strategy you can follow every day to answer the question every gold trader asks in the morning: XAUUSD buy or sell today?
Step 1: Set the daily bias
Open the daily and 4-hour charts and decide the bias before the session starts.
- Bullish bias: gold above its rising 50 EMA on the 4-hour chart, making higher lows, and the US dollar weakening.
- Bearish bias: gold below a falling 50 EMA, making lower highs, and the dollar strengthening.
- Neutral: price stuck between two clear levels. Wait for the break, or trade the edges with small size.
Gold usually moves opposite to the US dollar and US real yields. If the dollar index and Treasury yields are falling, gold buyers have the wind at their back.
Step 2: Mark the levels that matter
Mark these on the chart every morning:
- Yesterday's high and low: the most watched intraday levels.
- The Asian session range: London often breaks one side of it.
- Round numbers: gold respects every 50 and 100 dollar level.
- Last week's high and low and major swing points on the 4-hour chart.

Gold is quiet during the Asian session and comes alive in London and especially the London and New York overlap, when US data is released. A simple session plan:
- Asian session: mark the range. No trades for most traders.
- London open: watch for a break of the Asian range in the direction of your daily bias.
- New York open: the biggest moves of the day, especially around 13:30 GMT data releases.
Step 4: The entry setups
The best gold trading strategy keeps setups simple. Two work very well:
1. Pullback in the trend. In a bullish bias, wait for gold to pull back to a support level or the 21 EMA on the 1-hour chart, then buy when a bullish candle closes. Stop below the level, target the day's high and the next resistance.
2. Breakout and retest. When gold breaks a key level with a strong close, wait for price to come back and test the level from the other side. Enter on the rejection candle. This filters out many fakeouts.

Step 5: Stop loss, size and targets
Gold moves 20 to 40 dollars on a normal day and much more on news days. Give your stop loss room: beyond the level, plus a buffer of a few dollars. Then size the position so that hitting the stop costs no more than 1% of the account.
- On most brokers, 1 standard lot of XAU/USD is 100 ounces, so a 1 dollar move is worth 100 dollars per lot.
- A 0.10 lot moves 10 dollars per 1 dollar move in gold.

Step 6: Respect the news
Gold reacts strongly to:
- US CPI inflation and PCE
- Non-farm payrolls
- Fed decisions and speeches by the Fed chair
- Geopolitical risk, which drives safe-haven buying
Check the economic calendar every morning. Many gold traders close or reduce positions before a high-impact release and trade the new direction 15 to 30 minutes after it.
XAUUSD buy or sell today: a 60-second checklist
- Daily and 4H trend: up, down or range?
- Dollar and yields: supporting or fighting the bias?
- Key levels marked: yesterday's high/low, Asian range, round numbers?
- High-impact news today? At what time?
- Setup: pullback or breakout and retest?
- Stop, size (1% risk) and target (2R or more) written down?
If you cannot answer all six, the best trade today is no trade.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to trade gold?
The London and New York overlap, roughly 12:00 to 16:00 GMT, when US data is released and volume is highest.
How much money do I need to trade gold?
With micro lots (0.01) a small account can trade gold with sensible risk. Use the margin calculator to see how much margin your broker needs.
Is gold a buy or sell today?
It depends on the trend, the dollar and today's news. Use the checklist above, or open the daily gold verdict in Alice for a ready-made plan.
Why does gold fall when the dollar rises?
Gold is priced in US dollars. A stronger dollar makes gold more expensive for buyers using other currencies, and higher US yields make non-yielding gold less attractive.
