Search for the best forex indicator for MT5 and you will find thousands of "holy grail" indicators. Most of them repaint, lag or simply re-draw the same price data in a new colour. Professional traders use a small set of simple indicators that each answer one question. Here are the seven that actually help, all available free in MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5.
1. Moving averages (EMA 21, 50 and 200): the trend
Question answered: which way is the trend?
- Price above the 200 EMA: favour buys. Below: favour sells.
- EMA 21 above EMA 50 above EMA 200: a strong, aligned uptrend.
- Pullbacks to the 21 or 50 EMA are classic entry zones in a trend.

2. RSI: momentum and exhaustion
Question answered: is the move strong or tired?
RSI above 50 supports buyers, below 50 supports sellers. Overbought (above 70) and oversold (below 30) are warnings, not signals on their own. The most useful RSI signal is divergence: price makes a new high but RSI does not, which often comes before a reversal.
3. MACD: trend changes
Question answered: is momentum turning?
MACD crossovers and the histogram flipping from negative to positive confirm that momentum is changing direction. It works best on the 1-hour and 4-hour charts and in trending markets.

4. ATR: volatility and stop loss distance
Question answered: how far should my stop be?
The Average True Range shows how much a pair moves per candle. A stop of 1 to 1.5 ATR beyond your level keeps you out of normal noise. ATR is also the best way to compare pairs: GBP/JPY can move three times as much as EUR/GBP.
5. Bollinger Bands: squeezes and extremes
Question answered: is a big move coming?
When the bands squeeze tight, volatility is low and a breakout is often near. In a range, touches of the outer bands are possible reversal zones; in a trend, price can "walk the band" for a long time.
6. Pivot points: intraday levels
Question answered: where are today's key levels?
Daily pivot points are calculated from yesterday's high, low and close, so every trader sees the same levels. They are especially useful for day traders on EUR/USD, GBP/USD and gold.

Question answered: which currency is strong and which is weak?
A currency strength indicator compares each major currency against all the others. Pairing the strongest with the weakest gives cleaner trends than trading two currencies that are both flat. You can use our free live currency strength meter instead of installing one in MetaTrader.
How to combine indicators without clutter
Use one indicator per question: one for trend (EMAs), one for momentum (RSI or MACD), one for volatility (ATR) and price levels for entries. More indicators rarely add information; they add confusion. A clean chart with three tools beats a screen covered in ten.
Best indicator for scalping
For scalping on the 1-minute to 5-minute chart, keep it fast: EMA 9 and 21 for direction, VWAP or pivot points for levels, and the session clock so you only scalp the London and New York sessions when spreads are tight.
Indicators vs automatic trading robots
Indicators help you decide; expert advisors (EAs) trade for you. If you would rather automate a tested strategy, see our guide to forex trading robots and our automatic trading robot channel.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most accurate forex indicator?
No indicator is accurate on its own. The most reliable approach is to combine trend (moving averages), momentum (RSI) and key price levels, then manage risk with a stop loss.
Are MT4 and MT5 indicators the same?
The standard indicators are the same. Custom indicators must be written for each platform: MT4 uses MQL4 and MT5 uses MQL5.
Do paid indicators work better?
Rarely. Most paid indicators repackage moving averages, RSI or support and resistance. Test any indicator on a demo account for at least a month.
Which indicator is best for gold?
ATR for stop distance, the 50 EMA on the 4-hour chart for trend and daily pivots for intraday levels work well on XAU/USD.
